Regular Maintenance

The necessity of bringing your bike in regularly for maintenance cannot be overstated. Like any complicated piece of machinery, proper adjustment and regular maintenance are requisite for reliability, safety and enjoyment.

Remember, even the simplest bicycle has hundreds and hundreds of moving parts. They all must be kept properly adjusted and lubricated in order for your bike to function as it was designed to. If you are not sure when it’s time, or how often you should bring it in, just ask one of our mechanics and they will be glad to show you what to look for and how to tell when service is due. If you want the short version, here it is.

Pick the bike up about an inch from the ground and drop it back down on the wheels. If you hear a rattle or short vibration, it indicates something is loose or out of adjustment. You should only hear a dull thud when it hits the ground. No rattling or tinny sound at all. Also, if something isn’t working right, like the brakes or the shifting is rough or not working at all or it makes an unusual noise, it probably would be a good idea to bring it in before you get stranded during a ride. If the bike seems harder to pedal, don’t think it’s you being out of shape, it’s more likely low tire pressure or a bearing point too tight or a drive line lubrication problem, or a combination of all three. Many of these things happen when bikes sit for long periods of time like over winter.

Remember, your bike is more than just a bike. It’s also a form of transportation. With regularly scheduled maintenance, it will provide safer, better, longer and more enjoyable service to you.
