Fixed Gear

Bikes with No Gears? Yikes!

If you’ve made your way to this page then you surely know about it. Fixed gear bikes are what’s going on today in the world of “What’s New?” The funny thing is fixed gear bikes have been around for as long as the bicycles itself. The very first bikes to appear on the scene in the 1800s were fixed. What is new is what people are doing with them. These bikes are actually two bikes in one the way most of them are set up. The rear hubs accommodate both a trac cog that is locked to the hub and a freewheel on the other side that facilitates a more practical “commuter” capability. In this way, one can commute during the week, and flip the rear wheel around for some weekend fixie fun ‘till Monday rolls around again. One of the most alluring things about these bikes is their simplicity. No gears and often times no brakes (yikes) mean less down time and more trouble free riding. A very appealing prospect indeed.
